An Open Letter to our JA Family:
As a first-generation American of color, I learned early on how the color of my skin contributes to attention from law enforcement; I know how much it hurts - and eventually frustrates - to feel "less than" and "un-American" because of appearance. Unfortunately, systemic racism over hundreds of years has created gross inequities today in measurable quality of life indicators (health, education, income, wealth accumulation, etc) for people of color. Predictably, these built-in disadvantages continue to inhibit economic prosperity, especially within the black community, by any measure … and JA San Diego continues to be uniquely positioned to be part of the solution.
As we proudly join others calling for truly equitable policies across society, we will continue to actively empower historically disenfranchised communities through the education of youth, preparing them with the tools to access economic success that so many of us were inherently privileged to learn.
