School Experiences Improved Test Scores, Credits Volunteers

Junior Achievement of Northern California board of directors member Louie Lombardo has discovered the impact a small group of professionals can have on a large group of students: His 22 Lockheed Martin volunteers reached 428 students in 19 classrooms during their "JA in a Day" volunteer effort at San Miguel Elementary School in Sunnyvale, California. The lessons provided the students with important education, and the time spent provided something even more important: meaningful motivation. According to Principal Brenda Guy, in part due to volunteer involvement at San Miguel, the school had seen a 22-percent increase in 2010 Standardized Testing and Reporting Scores (STAR).In a thank-you letter to his volunteers, Louie shared that Principal Guy was ecstatic to have Junior Achievement return to her classrooms, especially as it was their ninth annual effort. She explained that JA not only provided outstanding education, but also filled a critical void for her students: a need for role models. By providing a valuable perspective on the importance of education to future success, JA volunteers had helped her students make a connection between what they were learning in school with what they needed to be successful in work and life.In as little as an hour a week or a day in a lifetime, volunteers like Louie and his group, make a difference in the lives of young people in their community. By sharing their skills and knowledge and by providing an example of successful adulthood, they help young people to realize future possibilities and personal potential, keys to empowering them to own their economic success.
